ECO-Development

Structure

ECO-Development (Ecodev) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) created in 1999 in Mauritania to support development institutions, and their funded recipients, at their foundations (communities, associations, NGOs…) through training, consulting and implementation of development projects. It was created by Mauritanian engineers who have worked as a team on development projects or with other NGOs.

Objectives

Our principal objective is to encourage development on the national and regional levels. At the local level, we participate in the implementation process of the CSLP (Strategic Framework of the Fight against Poverty) initiated by the government over the past few years. In this framework, we are pushing to:

Training of Masons in Gogui (Hodh El Gharbi)

• Support groups and communities that are most underprivileged and encourage the participatory dynamics of local development. We initiate and implement projects based on technical innovation, while focusing on skill transfer and the development of local capacities
• Encourage the emergence and independence of local groups (NGOs, OCB (Community Based Organizations), OSP (Specialized Versatile Operators), Credit Unions, etc…)
• Organize campaigns in order to support trainings on the problems of development
• Promote research and training for a better understanding and greater knowledge of different aspects and setbacks concerning development in collaboration with relevant and appropriate services
• Conceive, develop and direct training modules adapted to meet the needs expressed by the populace in our areas of intervention: decentralization, participatory development, and environmentalism

Intervention Strategy

Our intervention strategy is intimately linked to the needs expressed by the population and to the focuses of our partners. Over the course of the past two years, we have intervened under two methods:

Gardening Demonstatration for the Cooperative of Zravi (Assaba)

• At the project level — With a conception plan from investigation to implementation (while favoring technical innovation)
• At the service level (in the form of studies, consulting, and trainings) — Which has permitted us to respond to needs expressed by development partners

Our interventions are based particularly on:

• The planning process as a function of the target groups' needs
• Participatory execution
• Sustainability of proposed systems
• Respect of the environment
